Robin Rhode
I first heard of Robin Rhode through his 2008 solo exhibition at London’s Hayward Gallery just south of the Thames. It was an exhibition that stuck with me long after I had removed myself from the building. The depth and raw form that Rhode brings to his work is without doubt inspired by his upbringing in apartheid ridden South Africa. While street art is becoming commonplace and is subverting classical styles in mainstream culture and gallery owner’s clamour for the latest rough hewn masterpieces rather than classic elegance; Rhode walks a fine line between both worlds. The tongue in cheek wit of a Banksy with a tenderness and depth that brings it to a class of it’s own.
